AKJM English Medium High School was started by the Jesuits on 7 August 1961. The name of the school enshirnes the memory of the late illustrious archbishop Mar Mathew Kavukatt. The school is based on the Jesuit system of education with its five centuries of educational tradion, development and practice. The essential aspects of Jesuit educaion quoted below are based on the charcteristics of Jesuit Education, the document by the international commission on the Apostolate of Jesuit Educaion (ICAGE) and presented by Very Rev. Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach S.J, the superior General of the Society of Jesus, on 8 December, 1986.

The Characteristics of Jesuit Education

1. Person Oriented

It is in contrast to subject oriented. The emphasis is on the human, personal relationship for growth. Education is the formation of the human person as oppossed to mere imparting of information through the teaching of a subject. Hence individual attention is paid to each student in a Jesuit school.

2. Integral

A Jesuit school aims at forming the whole human person, in all dimensions of faculties. It is comprehensive and includes both the individual and social aspects.

3. Value Based

The effort involved on the part of the school, as well as of the person, includes formation of character acquiring of one’s value system, keeping proper balance inspite of pressures and emotions, responsible use of freedom, struggling against the forces of evil and seeing the world in need of transformation.

4. Pursuing Excellence

The Jesuit catchword ‘magis’ means greater and greater (better than the best) degree of effectiveness, implying the fullest possible development of all the dimensions of the personality. This goal is achieved throgh teachers of moral integrity who are proffessionally competent and dedicated.

5. Adapting for Relevance

A Jesuit school maintains an openness and flexibility in adapting the school structure, policies to the newly emerging trends and needs so as to attain its goals in the best and most effective way.

6. Towards a Just Society

The Jesuit school stands for justice. The pupil being formed becomes consicious of the unjust situations and structures of the society in which he lives.

7. Participative

A jesuit school is not a mere assembly of individuals but an interacting community of pupils and teachers. Learning is a partnership process. The administration is participative. The parents are members of the educational community and coeducaters with the teachers and the head of the school.

8. Faith inspired

The specific Character of the school

Admission is open to all, irrespective of caste and creed. It is a boy’s school which offers the Kerala pattern of the secondary school course. The medium of instruction is English. The Kinder garten section will follow the coeducation system from the next academic year.

ADMISSION

The entry level to AKJM school is LKG. Admission to the other class depends on the availability of seats.

Library

Students ought to make use of the school library and develop the reading habit. Reading of good books is an essential part of education.

AKJM Higher Secondary School is situated at Kanjirappally. One kilometer north of Kurishumkal Junction on the Kanjirappally Ponkunnam (KK Road) Bus route.
