Dear Sir, I am a Nurse currently working in India. What are the requirements to come to UK for work purposes? Is it still possible to get visa? Many Thanks in advance, Sini Joseph

Dear Sini,
Thanks for your enquiry.
Registration with the NMC:
The requirements for foreign nurses to obtain registration are different for Nurses from different countries. For Indian Nurses the first requirement is to approach the Nursing & Midwifery Council in the UK and start the registration process by paying £140 and filling the form. In order to do this you are required to give IELTS (Academic) 7 score in all the four modules on top of your Nursing Qualification. 12 Months work experience is also mandatory for NMC registration. Once you obtain successful registration with the NMC then you are required to do an ONP (Overseas Nurses programme) in the UK. This includes a 20 days Protected Learning Programme and supervised training at a work place for a minimum of 3 months. Detailed information can be obtained using the following link.

Getting visa:
It is possible for Nurses to obtain work visa i.e. Tier2 (General) visa to come to the UK for Work provided they have done the initial registration requirements with the NMC as explained above. Once the registration is done, you need to find an Educational establishment providing the ONP in the UK and a prospective employer in the UK who is willing to provide the Training placement leading to fulltime employment when you successfully complete the ONP and obtain full registration from NMC as a registered Nurse in the UK. Your prospective employer can issue you a Certificate Of Sponsorship for the purpose of obtaining a Tier2 (general) visa to the UK for a maximum initial period of 3 years.
Minimum salary to be paid during Supervised Practise is currently £16,110 per year. On successful completion of training the minimum salary must be raised to £21,176 per year. This is based on 39 Hours of work per week.
